Hydromulch

What is Hydromulch?

Hydromulching is a process similar to hydroseeding, but it is primarily used for erosion control rather than simple seeding. In hydromulching, a mixture of water, mulch, and sometimes additives like tackifiers (which help the mixture stick to the soil) is sprayed over bare soil. This mulch layer forms a protective barrier that helps prevent soil erosion, retains moisture, and reduces the impact of rain and wind on the soil surface.

How is Hydromulch Different from Hydroseed?

While hydromulch and hydroseed share similarities in their application processes, they serve different purposes as follows:

  • Purpose:

    • Hydroseed: The primary goal is to plant seeds and establish vegetation, typically grass, ground cover, or wildflowers.
    • Hydromulch: The main objective is erosion control. It’s used to stabilize soil, especially on slopes or disturbed areas, and is often applied where immediate vegetation is not the priority.
  • Composition:

    • Hydroseeding: The slurry used in hydroseeding includes seeds, mulch, water, and sometimes fertilizers or other growth-promoting additives.
    • Hydromulching: The slurry primarily consists of mulch and water, along with tackifiers or other additives to improve soil adhesion. Seeds may or may not be included, depending on the project’s goals.
  • Application:

    • Hydroseeding: Applied when the goal is to establish vegetation quickly, such as for lawns, erosion control with vegetation, or landscape projects.
    • Hydromulching: Applied in areas where erosion needs to be controlled immediately, such as construction sites, steep slopes, or areas prone to wind or water erosion. It can also be used as a first step before planting seeds or plants later.
  • Results:

    • Hydroseeding: Results in the germination and growth of plants, providing both coverage and erosion control as the plants establish.
    • Hydromulching: Provides an immediate protective barrier against erosion. If seeds are not included, no vegetation will grow, but the soil will be stabilized
